What gives the shade its protective properties?

The core of the shield is composed of multiple layers of high-tensile para-aramid fibers. Many refer to products like these generically as "Kevlar curtains" as BBP constructs the shielding using ballistic fabric made from DuPont™ Kevlar® fibers, which is then sourrounded by a polyester cover material to protect the fibers from the elements, and supplemented with additional nylon and polyester support materials as needed.
DuPont™ and Kevlar® are trademarks or registered trademarks of affiliates of DuPont de Nemours, Inc.

Is it really as easy to buy and install as you claim?

Mounting the shades above a window is no more complicated than mounting a commercial window shade, as the designs are quite similar in many regards. Specifying the product you want to purchase only requires a few measurements to be taken, which is no more complex than what is encountered when purchasing custom window shades. Because the shielding is made entirely of fabric (the same materials used in military-grade body armor), the BBP shielding is significantly easier to work with than conventional ballistic materials such as fiberglass, glass, plastic, or steel, as it is a small fraction of their weight.  Since the products feature a patented energy dissipation design that significantly reduces the stress transferred to the wall and frames when a bullet is caught, the mounting requirements for the shielding are surprisingly simple: drive a few screws into the wall brackets for the studs and place the shade between the brackets.

How many rounds will it stop?

In an informal test case, 100 rounds of 9mm ammunition were fired into a 20 sq ft shade, spreading the impacts fairly evenly over the surface area. No penetrations were observed in the fabric.  However, factors such as projectile velocity and shot grouping can compromise the material with fewer impacts than what this test showed. The product has only been certified up to the UL 752 Level 3 standard, and that is the limit of the product's official guarantee.

Can it stop assault rifle fire?

There is no all-fabric solution anywhere that can withstand rifle fire (such as .223 or 7.62), due to the pointed tips these rounds have and their higher velocities.  In order to stand up to a rifle round, the shielding would have to be made from rigid materials (and therefore become quite heavy).  If you need protection from rifle fire, please call us, and we will recommend several reliable suppliers of materials that meet your specific needs.
