How it works

Bullet-resistant protection that deploys and retracts similar to conventional window shades

  • Shades and door shields deploy from above the window/door frame either by manual hand crank or a motorized system.
  • The motor can be activated with a standard wall switch, wireless remote control, or by connecting to an existing alarm system.
  • The all-fabric shielding benefits from the patented BBP "energy dissipation solution" that allows the shield to act as though it is catching the bullet rather than simply resisting its impact only with brute strength.
This significantly reduces the stress on the entire system, including the mountings to the walls and framing.
  • For added stability on smaller windows/doors, outdoor use, and recommended applications, two types of retention devices can secure the bottom of the fabric:
  • Cable Guide: As the shield lowers into positions, the hem bar rides along cables attached to the side of the door/window, providing added resistance to movement as bullets impact.
  • Locking Hem Bar: When lowered into position, the hem bar locks into mounts that sit below the window, holding the bottom of the shade securely into place as the bullets impact.

Is BBP's product bulletproof?

Yes, it is bulletproof in terms of meaning that it has been proven to meet the highest known industry standards for certifying a safety product that can stop handgun bullets.
Then why not simply call it "bulletproof?"
  • Many people use the term “bulletproof” when speaking about safety solutions; however, this term can be misleading, as to some people, it implies insurmountable protection.
  • "Bullet-resistant" conveys trust without exaggeration. Similar to how the electronics industry embraced the term “water-resistant” instead of "waterproof" to convey that the products can withstand water to a certain extent but are not perfectly impervious under all conditions.
  • No physical barrier can guarantee ABSOLUTE protection against every type of bullet or sustained attack. At Ballistic Barrier Products, we intentionally use the term “bullet-resistant” because it represents the honest, tested performance of our products, and honesty is foundational to our brand authority.
When you invest in a Ballistic Barrier product, you’re getting exactly what we promote: a certified, state-of-the-art bullet-resistant barrier that can turn a vulnerable window or doorway into a lifesaving shield. We believe that combining clear, factual language with proven results, independently verified by the renowned UL Solutions lab, is the most persuasive message of all.

How many rounds will it stop?

In an informal test case, 100 rounds of 9mm ammunition were fired into a 20 sq ft shade, spreading the impacts fairly evenly over the surface area. No penetrations were observed in the fabric.  However, factors such as projectile velocity and shot grouping can compromise the material with fewer impacts than what this test showed. The product has only been certified up to the UL 752 Level 3 standard, and that is the limit of the product's official guarantee.

Is it really as easy to buy and install as you claim?

Mounting the shades above a window is no more complicated than mounting a commercial window shade, as the designs are quite similar in many regards. Specifying the product you want to purchase only requires a few measurements to be taken, which is no more complex than what is encountered when purchasing custom window shades. Because the shielding is made entirely of fabric (the same materials used in military-grade body armor), the BBP shielding is significantly easier to work with than conventional ballistic materials such as fiberglass, glass, plastic, or steel, as it is a small fraction of their weight.  Since the products feature a patented energy dissipation design that significantly reduces the stress transferred to the wall and frames when a bullet is caught, the mounting requirements for the shielding are surprisingly simple: drive a few screws into the wall brackets for the studs and place the shade between the brackets.

Can it stop assault rifle fire?

Unfortunately, no.  Due to the pointed tips of rifle rounds and their higher velocity, there is no fabric solution anywhere that can withstand rifle fire (such as .223 or 7.62).  Any solution that can withstand a rifle round will be made from rigid materials (and heavy).  If you truly need protection from rifle fire, please call us, and we will recommend several reliable suppliers of materials that meet your specific needs.
