What gives this shielding its protective properties?

The core of the fabric shade material is composed of layers of high-tensile para-aramid fibers. Many refer to products like these generically as "Kevlar curtains" as the layers are composed of ballistic fabric made from DuPont™ Kevlar® fibers. This core is then surrounded by a polyester cover material to protect the fibers from the elements, and supplemented with additional nylon and polyester support materials as needed.

How easy is it to install?

Only a few measurements are required, and then answer a few questions about any hardware on the door. Because the shielding is made entirely of fabric (the same material used in police-grade bulletproof vests), the BBP shielding is significantly easier to work with than conventional ballistic materials such as fiberglass, glass, plastic, or steel, as it is much lighter and flexible.  Additionally, the design features a patented energy dissipation design that reduces the stress transferred to the door, wall, and door frames when a bullet is caught, making the mounting requirements for the shielding surprisingly simple. For the door roll-ups, installation is as easy as installing a conventional window shade that would sit above the door frame. It's even easier for the door panels, as they bolt directly to the door itself—no modifications to the doors, frames, or walls ever required.

Great solution, but I don't have the budget for it. Is there any help for struggling schools?

There are solutions for both public and private schools that are too budget-strained to afford investments in protective equipment.  An abundance of federal and state funding opportunities exists.  Visit our Grants page to find a comprehensive listing of various funding sources.

Is there a version that will stop assault rifles?

Because of the pointed tips of rifle rounds and the higher velocity, there is no fabric-only ballistic solution that can withstand rifle fire (such as .223 or 5.56).  Any solution that can withstand a rifle round will have to be made from rigid ballistic materials (and therefore quite heavy).  If you truly need protection from rifle fire, please call us, and we will recommend several reliable suppliers of materials that meet your specific needs.
